Which tapes do you need?

Tape is the part of a shirt or trouser nobody sees and everybody notices when it is missing. It stops seams stretching out of shape and gives an edge something to be sewn to.

Shirt tape and trouser tape compared by what each is, where it goes in the garment, and what it is for
TypeWhat it isWhere it goesWhat it is for
Shirt tape Narrow woven cotton tapeInside shoulder seams, plackets and openingsStops the seam stretching and holds the line straight
Trouser tape Wider and stiffer woven tapeAlong the inside of a trouser waistbandHolds the waistband shape and finishes the inside edge

Tell us the width in millimetres and whether it is going into a shirt or a waistband. If you have a sample, a photo against a ruler is enough.

Questions buyers ask about tapes

What is shirt tape used for?
It is sewn into shoulder seams, plackets and openings to stop them stretching out of shape. On a shirt that is worn and washed often, it is the difference between a shoulder line that stays straight and one that goes wavy.
What width of tape do I need?
Shirt tapes are usually narrow, in the range of a few millimetres, and waistband tapes are wider and stiffer. The right width depends on the seam it is going into, so tell us the garment and we will tell you what is normally used.

Tell us the item and the quantity. A photo of the trim or the garment helps most.
